Sujal Manohar ’20: Reflections on Mental Health at Duke

Part of our “Art and Artists are Essential” collection and invitation.

Sujal Manohar is a senior neuroscience and visual arts double major with a chemistry minor. Her senior Graduate with Distinction project in Visual Arts, titled Reflect: Mental Health Experiences at Duke, focuses on mental health experiences at Duke, which she developed through interviewing Duke students, staff, and healthcare staff about their mental health journeys. The result is a reflection on managing chronic mental health conditions, the impact of campus culture on mental health, and the challenges that patients and providers alike face.

Manohar plans to create an immersive therapy waiting room this fall at the Wellness Center Gallery. This will not be her first exhibit, her artwork has been displayed at the Student Wellness Center Gallery from November 2018 to February 2019, and at in The Art of Mental Health  at the Rubenstein Arts Center from November 2019 to January 2020, where she also spoke on a panel discussing her creative process and the overlap of arts and mental health. See more of her work here.
