“Swift tempos, minimal vibrato and – most noticeably – excellent ensemble went into a warm, sweeping and well-appointed reading.”

THE WASHINGTON POST

From one of Europe’s premier chamber orchestras comes a group of eight string players for an almost theatrical approach to chamber playing. Standing in a semi-circle, the self-conducted Camerata Nordica octet is “in a class by itself in the way these players so perfectly negotiate the very intricate, most fiercely quick and complex sections” (ClassicsToday.com).

Genius, youth, and a hint of irreverence — these are qualities shared by Mozart, Mendelssohn, and Shostakovich who wrote astonishingly good works at a young age. A standout from Sweden’s chamber scene, Camerata Nordica brings them together, opening with a jocular romp by Mozart, while Mendelssohn’s Octet serves as the anchor of the concert. Written by the composer at just 16, the frolicsome, high-energy Octet, spins dizzying interplay between eight independent voices. Considered one of the masterworks of chamber music, the Mendelssohn Octet inspired the other octet on this program, the blazing Op. 11 by 18-year-old Dmitri Shostakovich.

Program

Trad. – Two Swedish folk tunes (arr. Camerata Nordica)
Mozart: Grande Sestetto Concertante, after Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola, K. 364
Shostakovich: Two pieces for string octet, Op. 11
Mendelssohn: Octet in E-flat Major, Op. 20

Under the auspices of Kalmar Läns Musikstiftelse, the ensemble has garnered a reputation for its distinctive performance style, captivating audiences with standing performances, a conductor-less approach, and occasional reliance on memory rather than scores. This dynamic energy and shared musical purpose form the core of the ensemble’s identity, complemented by its innovative and creative programming.

Comprised of both permanent and international members, Camerata Nordica draws exceptional talent from chamber music ensembles and orchestras across Sweden and Europe. This amalgamation of skilled musicians allows the ensemble to deliver a distinct and intimate chamber music experience to its audiences, leaving a lasting impact.

Locally, the ensemble nurtures a strong bond with its audience, acting as a pillar within the vibrant musical community. Camerata Nordica places great importance on engaging and inspiring young audiences, actively developing projects tailored to their needs.
