This life-sized dome was designed to serve as a meditative space for students, faculty and members of the wider community. This installation was designed and built by undergraduate Kora Kwok (Trinity, ’20), who is exploring how art spaces can foster human connections.

Ocean Room is a life-sized dome designed to serve as a meditative space for students, faculty, and community members. Video projections of the oceans illuminate the exterior and interior walls of the dome, while the sound of waves fill the space inside. Visitors are encouraged to come alone, come with a friend, or join another visitor inside.
This hand-built space aims to be a refuge for the community—a place where people can rest, reflect, and find solace within the chaos and pressures of Duke. Additionally, Ocean Room aspires to explore the dynamics between space, refuge, and human interactions—and above all, the idea that art spaces can foster human connections. Will the Ocean Room experience form a subliminal bond between people who may otherwise be strangers on campus?
