Jules Odendahl-James Director of Engagement

Holding an MFA in Directing and a MA and PhD in performance studies, Jules has been active in the Triangle theater-making scene for over 25 years and a faculty/staff member at Duke for over 20 years first in Duke’s Thompson Writing Program, then as the resident dramaturg in Duke’s Theater Studies department. In 2014, she became the Director of Academic Engagement for the Arts & Humanities within the Academic Advising Center. In that role, she advised students; co-directed the Story+ summer humanities research program; taught in FOCUS; and provided a range of support for arts & humanities curricular programs, DEMAN (Duke’s Entertainment, Media, Arts Network), and health humanities and disability studies working groups/conferences. She joined Duke Arts in May of 2024, returning to her arts roots to build greater connections among students, staff, and faculty on-campus and from campus into the wider Durham, Triangle, and NC communities.
