Zakir Hussain

March 16, 2020: Important Announcement re: Zakir Hussain

Dear Friends,

Due to precautionary measures related to COVID-19, Duke University is postponing all events with an expected attendance of more than 50 people taking place both on- and off-campus.

Sadly, we must cancel all Duke Performances presentations, both on- and off-campus, for the remainder of our spring season, including our co-presentation of Zakir Hussain with the Carolina Theatre of Durham on Thursday, April 16.

We wish this change wasn’t necessary, but under the circumstances an aggressive course of action is justified to protect public and community health.

Patrons who purchased tickets with a credit card will have those purchases refunded automatically. Patrons who purchased tickets with cash will be able to get a refund by returning their tickets to the Carolina Theatre of Durham Box Office (10AM-6PM Mon-Fri). The Duke University Box Office will issue refunds to all Duke student patrons for Zakir Hussain.

We thank you for your support of Duke Performances and hope you will attend our presentations later in the spring should conditions change.

Until then we wish good health for you and your loved ones as we endure this unprecedented challenge.

With best wishes,

Scott Lindroth
Vice Provost for the Arts
Duke University

Eric Oberstein
Interim Director
Duke Performances

Virtuosic tabla master Zakir Hussain is a legendary percussionist. Son of the lauded tabla player Alla Rakha, Hussain serves as an international ambassador for Hindustani classical music. For decades, his improvisational skill has found him playing alongside artists both from his home country of India as well as throughout the world, including Western collaborators George Harrison, Mickey Hart, Pharoah Sanders, and Van Morrison. In 1974, he co-founded Shakti with Mahavishnu Orchestra leader John McLaughlin and L. Shankar, releasing three extraordinary albums with the worldly jazz fusion group in as many years. For this special return engagement in Durham, Hussain brings his trio, including Jayanthi Kumaresh on veena and Kala Ramnath on Carnatic violin.
