The Ciompi Quartet

Clarinetist Romie de Guise-Langlois joins Duke’s own Ciompi Quartet, featuring renowned members of the university’s faculty, for an intimate evening of classical music by American composers Anthony Kelley, Anna Weesner, and Florence Price.

Florence Price’s unique compositional voice ranges easily through the stylistic territory of late-romantic and mid-20th century classical music, while confidently incorporating ideas and idioms from Black American music. Her recently discovered Second String Quartet accomplishes this with virtuosic flair over the course of its four expansive movements. The concert begins with Anthony Kelley’s playful take on two American games: baseball and basketball. Anna Weesner’s clarinet quintet The Eight Lost Songs of Orlando Underground are the imagined work of a fascinating but fictional character dreamt up by the composer.
