Music in the Gardens: Robbie Fulks

Even the stylistically broad label “alt-country” has been too slim to contain Robbie Fulks, “a wordier, more musically elastic, American Nick Lowe,” according to The New York Times. A graduate of Durham’s Carolina Friends School but a longtime anchor of Chicago’s roots stronghold, Fulks has worked in folk and soul, bluegrass and blues, pure pop and sneering rock during the last quarter-century. But it’s his songwriting — sardonic but sweet, detailed but welcoming — that has remained consistent no matter the musical guise. He returns to Durham on the heels of last year’s Upland Stories, one of his best albums yet.
