Miguel recalls the moment he met Santana, who owns a salon with his wife: “I really didn’t trust a man to cut my hair,” he shared laughing, but since all the other stylists were busy, he agreed to let Santana cut his hair. It turned out to be the best cut he’d ever gotten, so he kept coming back and over time the two became close friends. It didn’t take long for them to discover their shared musical interests and they started meeting up to learn son huasteco together. After a couple of years, Miguel’s father, a lover of son huasteco, located Alejo Sánchez, who was working in Virginia at the time. He convinced the talented violinist to move to North Carolina to teach Miguel and Santana and in March of 2020, the group formed the Trio Huasteco of Durham, NC.
