Okaidja Afroso: Jaku Mumor – Ancestral Spirit

Jaku Mumor is “spectacularly original … inhabited by a spirit that soars higher and higher as the songs bubble over with effervescence” – World Music Report

Okaidja Afroso weaves together cross-cultural influences to create hypnotic sonic landscapes. A multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and dancer, Afroso hails from a family of musicians and storytellers from the fishing village of Kokrobite on Ghana’s west coast. In his 25 years as a touring artist, Afroso has performed in diverse venues spanning the globe — from small fishing villages in the Canadian Arctic to the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

In Jaku Mumor — Ancestral Spirit, Afroso dives into his cultural roots by collaborating directly with indigenous Ga-Dangme fishermen to share the artistry of their a cappella singing and chants in his music and via film. This profoundly moving new work caps off a weeklong residency on our Durham campus. The performance is features five Ghanaian musicians collaborating alongside an original film by Afroso.
