Part of an outstanding multi-generational musical birthright that includes his father Calvin Jackson and genre-pioneering grandfather R. L. Burnside, Cedric Burnside literally grew up in the blues. Living in his patriarch’s home for much of his youth without the benefit of running water, the drummer absorbed the wonder and woe of the genre, his upbringing uniquely suiting him for the subject matter. In addition to performing and recording with his elders and relatives prior to their passing, he’s featured on albums by artists including Jimmy Buffett and Jimbo Mathus, as well as in a duo with guitarist Lightnin’ Malcolm. While most of his own albums have come under his namesake Cedric Burnside Project, last year’s GRAMMY award-nominated Benton County Relic excised the extraneous qualifier as he showcased and built upon the rich North Mississippi hill country sound for which his family became known.
