Documenting your Artwork: COVID Edition

About the Workshop

During COVID there is a continued need to create well balanced artwork documentation despite the lack of traditional resources or photographic studios. This workshop will discuss and demonstrate techniques for portfolio documentation of artwork (Photographic Images, Drawings, Paintings, Collage, Sculpture and Digital Images) in personal studios, homes or other atypical locations. Documentation techniques will be largely photographic with a focus on managing lighting configurations and camera settings. We will use Adobe Photoshop as a tool for simple digital post production methods to address common challenges in artwork documentation. Finally we will demonstrate the application of 3D modeling and rendering techniques to apply artwork documentation to simulated gallery conditions.

About the Instructor

Augustus E. Wendell is an Assistant Professor of the Practice in the Department of Art, Art History and Visual Studies at Duke University. Augustus completed his MFA in Computer Art at The School of Visual Arts and his undergraduate studies in Architecture and Photography at Northeastern University. He has held teaching appointments at Parsons the New School for Design, The New York School of Interior Design, Virginia Tech and the New Jersey Institute of Technology where he was program coordinator for the Digital Design program in the College of Architecture and Design.

Augustus researches the application of computational processes to design, the visual arts and historical research. He has a concentration in the application of image and model based workflows to aid in the study of complex geographic and spatial conditions. At Duke Augustus teaches courses in Digital Imaging, Immersive Virtual Worlds, 3D Modeling and Animation and Historical and Cultural Visualization.
