Make Your Own Plushie

Partnership with DukeCreate & DuWell

Taught by Julia Gartrell

About the Workshop

Make a new companion by sewing your very own plushie! Learn some basic hand sewing and embroidery techniques that will allow you to design and create a stuffed creature out of fabric. This class will be fun and relaxing. All levels are welcome.

Participants will be provided with:

  • 8 x 12 felt square (assorted colors)
  • Embroidery Floss and Needle
  • 1/4 yard Muslin
  • Yarn (a few colors)
  • Fiberfill
  • Buttons

Participants will need to bring their own: scissors, scrap fabric (if you want to incorporate it)

IMPORTANT NOTE: The first 30 Durham-based members of the Duke community to register will be provided with supplies for this workshop at no cost. An email will be sent prior to the workshop for on-campus pickup instructions.

About the Instructor

Julia Gartrell is an artist and educator based in Durham, NC. She received an MFA in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design and a BA in art from Kalamazoo College. Her work explores notions of “making do”, material plasticity, and radical approaches to repair.

She has participated in residencies at the Rubenstein Art Center, the Fine Arts Work Center, the Power Plant Gallery at Duke University, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, Ox-Bow School of Art, and others. Julia has exhibited nationally and internationally, and currently teaches as adjunct faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University.

About DukeCreate

DukeCreate is a series of free, hands-on arts workshops designed to help Duke students, staff, and faculty develop a variety of creative skills. Workshops are open to all skill levels and backgrounds. Most take place in the Duke Arts Annex or the Rubenstein Arts Center and are typically held weeknights 6-8pm.

Workshops are free to all Duke students and staff, with priority given to students. Class size is limited. Students must sign up in advance. Registration for the following week’s DukeCreate workshops goes live on Friday mornings – sign up in advance to guarantee your spot!  Online enrollment for Duke staff opens on the day of the workshop. Staff can also show up 10 minutes prior to a workshop in case a slot becomes available. Walk-ins will be accommodated on a space-available basis.

DukeCreate is sponsored by the Office of the Vice Provost for the Arts (DukeArts) and University Center Activities and Events (UCAE).
