About the Workshop

Explore the flavorful dances and music of Cuba! Participants will learn about Cuban culture through musicality and movement. This class is an introduction to Casino dance (Cuban Salsa) and includes elements from multiple Cuban dance and music genres such as Son, Cha-Cha-Cha, and Afro Cuban Folklore. Get ready to shimmy, body roll and enjoy the essence of Cuba’s popular dances! Agua!

Note:  This event is open to the entire Duke Community.

DISCLAIMER: This program involves physical exertion and movement through and across space, so before beginning ensure you have adequate clear, safe space free of obstacles to move and are wearing appropriate footwear for the floor surface. If more than one person will be participating, ensure adequate space to avoid contact with other participants. About the Instructor

Namajala Naomi Washington Roque is a graduate student in the inaugural MFA in Dance Embodied Interdisciplinary Praxis Program at Duke. She is currently a principal dancer and instructor for DC Casineros Dance Company in Washington DC and has been a member of the company for 10 years. She has taught and performed various Cuban genres, Casino, Rueda de Casino, Son, Chachacha, Rumba and Orisha Dance with the company both nationally and internationally and has trained with internationally renowned Cuban companies such as Ballet Folklorico Cutumba and Compania All Stars out of Santiago de Cuba.

About Duke Arts Create

Duke Arts Create is a series of free, hands-on arts workshops designed to help all Duke students, including graduate and professional students (including Duke Health), as well as Duke faculty and staff develop a variety of creative skills in the visual arts, dance and movement, creative writing and more. Workshops are open to all skill levels and backgrounds. Most workshops are held in the Duke Arts Annex, the Rubenstein Arts Center or the Duke Arts Office 2101 and are typically held weeknights from 6-8 p.m.
