Throwing on the Wheel
Partnership with Duke Arts Create

About the Workshop

Learn how to throw pottery on the wheel! In this introductory class, you will learn the basics of centering, throwing, and trimming pots. Note that this class is focused on learning throwing techniques rather than creating a finished product, and is a requirement to use the Arts Annex pottery wheels during open studio hours.
PLEASE NOTE: This will be a 3-hour workshop that begins at 5pm. Space is limited to only 12 participants. Please only enroll if you are sure you can attend. If you must cancel, please do so well in advance so another person can take your place. We anticipate the waitlist for this workshop will exceed 100 people.
About the Instructor

Anna Wallace is a current resident and native of Durham, North Carolina. She holds a BFA in Ceramics from the Cleveland Institute of Art, and an MFA in Studio Art from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Teaching has become an integral part of Anna’s artistic practice. She teaches at UNCG, High Point University, and is the Lead Visual Arts Instructor at the North Carolina Governor’s School West.
Much of Anna’s work infiltrates, as if the rugs, chairs, and vessels sprouted legs and marched out of the home and into the white box of the gallery. The colors, pattern density, and visual stimulation demand we pay attention. Her practice spans sculpture, installation, and performance. The way Anna handles each process is not dissimilar to the management of a home, bouncing from one thing to the next. Her work demonstrates an infatuation with female labor and the practices of women’s work.
In addition to Anna’s studio art practice, she designs and creates several collections of sustainably produced products. The pottery collection is made to seamlessly integrate into any existing kitchen, yet has a unique whimsical quality. The garment collection embraces slow fashion. Each item is sewn entirely from locally sourced vintage and remnant textiles—down to the thread.
