Young Bull is a homegrown R&B collective, yoking Southern soul grooves to hip-hop beats. It’s the project of two former schoolmates, Mique Cameron and Solomon Fox, who graduated from Durham School of the Arts. In 2016, Raleigh-based rapper Christian Sinclair joined the group, and Young Bull released its acclaimed debut, Sopadelic. Dispatching from its hometown and namesake, Young Bull delivers soul music that wrangles with the modern.
In 2007, Rissi Palmer released her debut single, “Country Girl,” and became the first Black woman to chart a country song since 1987. Ever since, Palmer has woven notes of R&B, gospel, and country into a sound she calls “Southern Soul.” Soulful it is: her latest album, Revival, released in 2019, revels in blackness, protest, and heritage, like a twangy Aretha Franklin. Listening to Revival is a lot like marching in a rally: sometimes you’ll hear chants, a burst of choral response, and sometimes you’ll slow down, sit alone in a band of sunlight. From her home in Durham, Palmer delivers anthems for the national moment.
FORM is a student-led arts and lifestyle publication. The primary goal of FORM Magazine’s recent visual project, Nexus, is to explore the relationship between diverse modes of artistic expression, namely: dance, music, sculpture, painting and cinematography. The video was filmed at the Nasher’s 2018 exhibition, Solidary & Solitary: The Joyner/Giuffrida Collection, which showcased groundbreaking abstract art by African American artist from the 1940s to the present. Additional Duke organizations and student collaborators who made Nexus possible: Hunter Stark, Defining Movement, Devils en Pointe, Nakisai, Apartment X, DUU Freewater Productions, The Rival and Nasher MUSE.

They will take us behind-the-scenes of the making of the spot, “Daydreaming,” share how they are creating globally during quarantine, as well as answer your questions.

Anytown, USA, created and taught by Randolph Benson, is an annual filmmaking production and editing course offered by CDS’s continuing education program in which students create videos about one small North Carolina town. Intermediate to advanced continuing education student filmmakers each tell a story of their choice within the town. Together the short films form a nuanced, intimate portrait of communities as they adapt in the face of change.
This year, as the world struggles with the COVID-19 global pandemic and because we were unable to travel to this year’s small town, each student filmmaker has made a film within their personal quarantine to create Anytown USA: Quarantine. This year’s screening will also be online for the public; watch on August 12 on YouTube.

Pleiades Arts will present its 8th annual Truth to Power visual arts show from August 6 through 30. The juried exhibit, which includes video, mixed media, painting, sculpture, and photography, features 30 North Carolina artists from 8 counties who speak to pressing issues of social justice. The exhibit is being hosted by Power Plant Gallery at the American Tobacco Campus. (The Power Plant Gallery is open by appointment to Duke class and curricular visits this fall.
