What are 2-3 ways your Duke experience helped prepare you for your current career role and/or previous roles?
The Duke network introduced me to career paths I didn’t know existed. The general culture of excellence, creativity, and service has prepared me to take on leadership opportunities when I see them and to grow rapidly in the first few years of my career.
How did you make the transition from Duke to your career? What are a few helpful takeaways from your first years out of Duke?
I was able to grow quickly by remaining humble and seeking mentors in my early career. The first few years are not always going to be a dream. I recommend remaining open to learning everything your job offers, but also searching for opportunities to explore other possibilities on the side by taking workshops, classes, and doing independent work. This has given me flexibility in my early career.
How did you decide what you wanted to do after Duke? And how did you make transition(s) to different fields?
Taking the advice of one of my mentors, I sent cold emails and even just showed up at a few companies I was interested in. By doing that, I was able to shadow at a few different places and decided to give it a go when the opportunity to train as an assistant editor came my way. I believe the right opportunity is always in front of me and transition will be a natural part of my path.
What is your favorite thing about working in your profession? Most challenging?
My favorite thing about this profession is being surrounded by creative people and artists all day every day. I’m inspired by my peers every day and have been challenged to grow in ways I didn’t expect. The most challenging thing about this industry is the intensity of it. There have been so many long periods of time where I’m expected to hand my life over for the project. That’s the tradeoff!
What are 2-3 pieces of advice you would offer to a student interested in your field(s)?
Whatever you do, hold on to why you’re doing it! It’s easy to become jaded and lose your sense of purpose in this industry, so do whatever you need to do to keep that passion alive. No matter how low on the ladder you are—and you will have to start there—bring your best attitude forth every day. Connections are everything in this industry and making lasting friendships will serve you.
