The acclaimed Nrityagram Dance Ensemble of southern India is one of the world’s great dance companies — the first to earn consecutive “Best Dance of the Year” honors from The New York Times. This September, Nrityagram comes to Duke for a four-day residency, merging its Odissi dance with the Kandyan approaches of Sri Lankan ensemble Chitrasena Dance Company in the evening-length piece Samhära. In the days leading up to their joint performances, Nrityagram and Chitrasena will participate in visits to Duke classes and lead two dance workshops, one for Duke students and another for community members working in Indian classical dance.
