Aya Shabu is a courageous storyteller and collaborator who uses site-specific performance, art, and ritual to remember African American ancestors and preserve neighborhoods. The Creator and Conductor of Whistle Stop Tours LLC, Aya partners with the Hayti Heritage Center and the Pauli Murray Center for History and Social Justice to develop embodied memory walks in African American neighborhoods. As the Director of Arts and Culture at Village of Wisdom Inc. and a Durham Cultural Advisory Board member, Aya curates spaces to protect Black genius in Durham and beyond. Alongside her husband, Aya continues to dance and drum with The Magic of African Rhythm.
