Nancy C. Sampson: “Keep a Good Sense of Humor”

Published By Duke Arts / published on: April 27, 2020

Inspired by the demand for toilet paper during COVID-19, Nancy C. Sampson created a satirical zine titled, "Make Your Own Toilet Paper," saying that especially during challenging times, humor can be a helpful resource.

Part of our “Art and Artists are Essential” collection and invitation.

“I created a satirical zine called ‘Make Your Own Toilet Paper,’ inspired by the universal quest for toilet paper that has been ongoing since the COVID-19 pandemic reached the U.S. This crisis has brought up, and continues to bring up, a range of emotions and I’ve always found humor to be the best way to get through tough times. I hope folks get a laugh or two out of my mini publication.

I think it is important to keep a good sense of humor during tough times. Creating this zine helped me express my ideas and it was a fun distraction when there was a lot of uncertainty in the media. Keep making stuff, even if you can only commit to fifteen minutes!” — Nancy C. Samspon
