Zakir Hussain & Rakesh Chaurasia

Indian classical music is defined by great familial dynasties. Two of its most formidable lines converge in Page Auditorium for an unforgettable evening of intricately melodious music for tabla and flute. The son of legendary tabla player Alla Rakha, Zakir Hussain is India’s most celebrated living musician: an innovative percussionist of international renown. He returns to Duke Performances after a stunning concert at Page Auditorium two years ago.The nephew of bansuri flute maestro Hariprasad Chaurasia, Rakesh Chaurasia visits Durham for the first time. The bansuri is a plain tube of bamboo that is simple in conception, difficult to master, and transcendent in tone. Pairing complementary talents for fluent rhythm and melody, these virtuosi draw deeply from their South Asian cultural inheritance to forge a sound where modernity and myth intertwine.
