Trio Jean Paul

Due to illness, Trio Jean Paul has canceled their January 27 & 28 performances.

Six works, five composers, two concerts, and an engaging blend of old and modern repertoire add up to an unforgettable weekend with Trio Jean Paul, an illustrious two-decade chamber music institution that plays with a refined wit and poetic intensity worthy of its literary namesake.

The Friday concert brings us a creative union of Haydn’s celebrated Piano Trio in C Major with two key works from Jean Paul’s early recording career: German postmodernist Wolfgang Rihm’s Fremde Szene III and Schumann’s first piano trio, a quintessentially restive Romantic work.

The Saturday program also begins with Haydn — the Piano Trio in D Minor — followed by a work that Jean Paul recorded to great approbation in 2009, Mendelssohn’s first trio. The Haydn and the Mendelssohn together form an intriguing context for the concluding work, Schubert’s late masterpiece.

HAYDN: Piano Trio No. 43 in C Major, Hob. XV: 27
SCHUMANN: Piano Trio No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 63

HAYDN: Piano Trio No. 37 in D Minor, Hob. XV: 23
BRAHMS: Piano Trio No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 101
SCHUBERT: Piano Trio No. 1 in B-flat Major, D. 898, Op. 99
