NCLAFF. UN FANDANGO EN CAROLINA

Un Fandango en Carolina. 2026. Iximché Media. 25 min.
The 25-minute film tells stories of North Carolina’s diasporic community from the Sotavento region of southern Mexico through music, memory, and migration. Centered on the son jarocho tradition, it asks us to listen closely to the stories of folks who have carried with them regional traditions and cultivated a sense of belonging in North Carolina for decades.

Un fandango en Carolina grows out of nearly five years of collaboration between Son de Carolina, Iximché Media, and community members who have built the annual Fandango de Durham since 2022. Recently, this work has expanded through the Duke Bass Connections project “Storytelling Our Latinx Community” which brings students into processes of community documentation and collaborative storytelling.

The event is free and open to the public and will also initiate the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the North Carolina Latin American Film Festival, happening throughout the fall. I’d be so glad to have you join us. Please share the invitation with students, colleagues, and others who might be interested.
