Music in the Gardens: Jake Xerxes Fussell & Band

The son of a prominent folklorist, Jake Xerxes Fussell learned the music of his home region firsthand at his father’s side, building up a vast knowledge base about the sounds native to the Georgia-Alabama border. On albums like 2017’s What In The Natural World and the newly released full band effort Out Of Sight, he plays covers of these traditional tunes as if they were his very own, carrying on a proud heritage while integrating what else he gleaned from folk players throughout the country. NPR commends him for his “deep respect and affinity for the Southern folk vernacular,” which comes across both on record as well as live. Presently dwelling in Durham, Fussell shares his informed view on this music at Sarah P. Duke Gardens in this special album release show.
