Music in the Gardens: William Tyler & Jake Xerxes Fussell

William Tyler is the guitarist every musician wants in their band: he’s played with everyone from Lambchop to Silver Jews to Hiss Golden Messenger. He’s also released two singular instrumental records, one of which Pitchfork called “the most vital, energized album by an American solo guitarist in a decade or more.” Tyler was last at Duke Performances in 2014 for the premiere of Corduroy Roads, an exploration of the legacy of the Civil War called “magnificent” by Indy Week. Tyler found a kindred spirit when he produced the acclaimed debut album by Durham’s Jake Xerxes Fussell, a spare and soulful collection of folk and blues songs. PopMatters hailed Fussell as “a fresh and vital new voice.” Don’t miss these two Southern musicians bound together in sound and song by their deep family roots in Mississippi.
