Livestream: Kate McGarry & Keith Ganz

We’re partnering with Duke Arts and WXDU on a livestream series hosted by Duke Performances on Facebook Live and Instagram Live.

We’re continuing the series with Durham-based vocalist Kate McGarry & guitarist Keith Ganz.

We’re encouraging our viewers to give to two important fundraising efforts organized by local arts organizations — the Durham Arts Council’s Arts Recovery Fund and NorthStar Church of the Arts’ Durham Artist Relief Fund — to directly support the Durham arts community. Additionally, Kate and Keith are also asking folks to consider supporting the Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC. (These funds are not affiliated with Duke University.)

With seven critically acclaimed recordings and two GRAMMY nominations for Best Jazz Vocal Album, vocalist Kate McGarry has become recognized as a jazz artist who brings authenticity and vitality to every song regardless of genre. The Wall Street Journal calls her music “austere and elegant, an exceptionally appealing blend of folk and jazz,” while The New York Times pronounced it “astute and sensitive.” Kate has toured and recorded with such jazz illuminati as Fred Hersch, Kurt Elling, Maria Schneider, John Hollenbeck, Billy Childs, Luciana Souza, Theo Bleckmann, and Tony Award-winner Jason Robert Brown. During her decade in NYC, McGarry served as a Lincoln Center Teaching Artist, U.S. State Department Jazz Ambassador, and jazz faculty member at the esteemed Manhattan School of Music. She has been featured on NPR’s Jazz Set with DeeDee Bridgwater, Piano Jazz with Marion McPartland, All Things Considered, and was voted the #1 Rising Star Female Vocalist in the 2016 Downbeat Critics Poll. After a sojourn out west to join the faculty at the California Jazz Conservatory, Kate has recently returned to Durham, NC with her husband and musical partner of 16 years, guitarist Keith Ganz.

Keith Ganz is a 2019 GRAMMY nominee is known for his soaring electric guitar work and luminous acoustic fingerstyle playing. Lauded as a “sublime master of subtlety” by JazzTimes, Keith has performed extensively with major jazz artists including Harry Connick, Jr., Tierney Sutton, Luciana Souza, Kurt Elling, Gretchen Parlato, Gary Versace, and Jo Lawry. TV appearances include Oprah, Ellen, The Late Show with David Letterman, The View, and Australian Idol. Keith is the long-time musical and life partner of vocalist Kate McGarry, serving as her producer, co-arranger, and musical director for six critically acclaimed albums including two GRAMMY nominations for Best Jazz Vocal Album. After honing his craft on the NYC jazz scene for many years and a stint out west at the California Jazz Conservatory, Keith has returned home to Durham, NC where he and Kate are currently working on their seventh album together, What to Wear in the Dark, featuring Gary Versace, Sean Smith, Clarence Penn, and Brandon Lee.
