NPR “Jazz Inspired”
“Jazz is a uniquely American art form. The Julia Keefe Indigenous Big Band… takes that one step further.”
Olympian
Led by the celebrated vocalist and luminary Julia Keefe (Nez Perce), the Julia Keefe Indigenous Big Band brings charisma, passion, and purpose to every stage—leaving audiences both inspired and educated. This all-star ensemble of Native and Indigenous jazz musicians celebrates the genre’s deep Indigenous roots, performing works by trailblazers like Mildred Bailey (Coeur d’Alene) and Jim Pepper (Kaw/Mvskoke), alongside contemporary composers.
Since its 2022 debut, the band has earned national acclaim, including a featured set at the Kennedy Center’s Mary Lou Williams Jazz Festival. Each performance both deepens and challenges our understanding of the “uniquely American” art form known as jazz.
