In its third concert, the Ciompi is pleased to help bring to life a major commission, organized by Duke Divinity professor Jeremy Begbie, of a new piano quintet by Christopher Theofanidis. The prominent American neo-romantic composer has been commissioned by many of the world’s leading musical institutions and recently joined the faculty of the Yale School of Music. Serving as bookends for this exciting new work are a gem by the 15-year-old Schubert, the String Quartet No. 7 in D Major, and a quartet that Tchaikovsky described as one of his best compositions.
