Last season, Durham’s own Carolina Chocolate Drops blew the roof off Reynolds Theater. After winning a “Best Traditional Folk” Grammy for their album Genuine Negro Jig, they take a victory lap — which includes major engagements with the NC Museum of Art and Carolina Performing Arts — at Page Auditorium for Duke Performances. With the departure of Justin Robinson and the addition of two new members (on cello and guitar), things have changed for the Drops lately, but their jubilant string-band music sounds sharper than ever.
With an opening set by Luminescent Orchestrii — a raucous gypsy-punk outfit that channels Romania by way of New York and with whom the Drops collaborated on an EP — get ready to clap your hands and stomp your feet for the high-energy showmanship of two singular but equally explosive bands.
