Durham native Andrew Tyson has garnered international praise as “a real poet of the piano” (BBC Radio 3). In his debut recital with Duke Performances, he brings his musical imagination to a hometown audience at Baldwin Auditorium with an adventurous concert. His remarkable artistic accomplishments include being a laureate of the Leeds International Piano Competition and achieving First Prize at the Géza Anda Competition in Zurich.

Tyson begins with Rameau’s Gavotte variée, a Gavotte and six impressive variations proving the pianist’s baroque technique. Two short works follow by Cécile Chaminade — her Autrefois and Thème variée are lyrical pieces painted with glassy textures. Staying in France, Tyson performs Ravel’s Miroirs, an acutely original set of character pieces portrayed with different impressionist techniques. The evening closes with Schumann’s rhapsodic Symphonic Études, a set of étude-variations exhibiting the composer’s distinctive characterizations.
