Making its sixth tour of the U.S., and its first stop at Duke, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin (Akamus) offers a panoramic concert of its specialty — music of the 17th and 18th centuries. Akamus is a unique ensemble in that its musical direction comes from four rotating concertmasters, plus a regular roll of guest conductors like René Jacobs. Founded in East Berlin in 1982, Akamus has grown in artistic reputation over the decades, receiving the prestigious Diapason d’Or and a GRAMMY nomination.

The program, Beloved Baroque, features familiar tunes like Pachelbel’s famous Canon in D, along with irresistibly passionate music by Vivaldi, Handel, and C.P.E. Bach. J.S. Bach’s double concerto is the highlight of the program, a work showing Bach’s mastery of melody imbued with dance-like movement. The collection of favorite composers offers a chance to hear a period-instrument ensemble that plays with “fearless energy, zest, and precision” (The Boston Globe).
