At Duke University, the MFA programs in Experimental & Documentary Arts and Dance: Embodied Interdisciplinary Praxis bring together artists who push creative boundaries through interdisciplinary practice.
The MFA in Experimental & Documentary Arts (MFA|EDA) is a two-year program that unites documentary approaches with experimental production across analog, digital, and computational media. Through this work, students develop a deep understanding of documentary traditions alongside the technical and creative skills to produce innovative, cross-disciplinary projects, culminating in a thesis exhibition presented as part of a Spring MFA Exhibition. Each student also completes a written thesis to accompany their final project.
This year’s MFA|EDA graduating cohort includes: Allison “Sunny” Dean, April Fan, Caleb Alexander Rivera, Claire Rosemary Lewis, Emma Volz, Lala Luo, Lauren Neefe, Guess, Mort O’Sullivan, Sarah Soucek, Sean Zou, Victoria Guillem, Xiaomeng Yan.
The MFA in Dance: Embodied Interdisciplinary Praxis (MFA|EIP) is a two-year, full-time terminal degree grounded in practice-led research across diverse cultural and artistic contexts. Students engage with urgent global issues and contribute to critical conversations within and beyond the arts through movement, collaboration, and interdisciplinary study. Working closely with faculty mentors, each student develops a portfolio of thesis actions. Many of these thesis projects range from performance and site-specific work to digital projects and community-based collaborations, all culminating in a public presentation and a written thesis.
This year’s MFA in Dance graduating cohort includes: Asili Johnson, Johanna Kepler, Tristian Griffin.

This year, the Dance Program is especially honored to celebrate the graduating Class of 2026—Tristian Griffin, Asili Johnson, and Johanna Kepler—whose highly original investigations have not only exemplified the program’s core values, but expanded them.
