DEMAN Weekend-ish Featuring “black-ish” and “grown-ish”

A Special DEMAN Weekend for 2020!

Wednesday, Oct 21, 7:30–9pm EST

Join us for a special DEMAN Weekend-ish event, featuring Duke alumni writers from the award-winning comedy shows “black-ish” and “grown-ish”! We are thrilled to host this event the night of the Season 7 premiere of ‘black-ish”. Meet the Duke alumni writers who will take us behind the scenes of the creative process, explore cultural themes and share their career paths, as well as answer your questions. Moderated by Mark Anthony Neal, the James B. Duke Distinguished Professor of African and African American Studies. Introduction by John Brown, Vice Provost for the Arts.

Instead of traveling to Durham for the 11th Annual DEMAN Weekend, this year we’re bringing a stellar, live panel of incredibly talented, creative Dukies to you via Zoom.

Our virtual panel will feature:

ABC’s Emmy® and Golden Globe®-nominated comedy series “black-ish” takes a fun yet bold look at one man’s determination to establish a sense of cultural identity for his family (Season 7 premieres Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at 9:30pm EST). A spinoff from “black-ish” creator, Kenya Barris, “grown-ish” follows the Johnsons’ eldest daughter, Zoey, as she heads off to college and quickly discovers that not everything goes her way once she leaves the nest. It’s a contemporary take on the issues facing students and administrators in the world of higher education (Season 4 premieres 2021).

As part of DEMAN Weekend-ish, you are also invited to watch any of our previous signature industry sessions. No registration required for these hour-long virtual episodes featuring exceptional DEMAN alumni from across the country, including NBC’s “Good Girls”, Beats by Dre and MISS JUNETEENTH.

Presented by Duke Arts, DukeCreate, Duke Black Alumni, The Department of African & African American Studies at Duke, Dukie Alumni, Duke Career Center, The Chronicle’s RECESS/Pitch Story Lab & Duke Global Education Office.
