The visual arts are at the forefront of one of the most exciting developments taking place at Duke. The Visual Studies Initiative, which is coordinated through the Department of Art, Art History & Visual Studies, operates at the interface of the arts, science, social sciences and the humanities. In addition, students take courses offered by the Arts of the Moving Image and may study abroad at Le Fresnoy, an internationally recognized center for the production of film, video, and installation art. At Duke, the Center for Documentary Studies offers students opportunities to combine artistic practice and social engagement, and collaborates closely with the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival. The Nasher Museum of Art has achieved world-wide distinction with exhibitions such as States of Mind: Dan and Lia Perjovschi, El Greco to Velázquez: Art During the Reign of Phillip III and Barkley L. Hendricks: Birth of the Cool.

Students enrich their experience through participation in campus organizations such as Freewater Productions, Cable 13, DiDA, Latent Image, the Nasher Student Advisory Board and the Visual Arts Committee. Students interested in the arts may wish to join the Arts Theme House.
